Why is dental hygiene key – and why here?
At Smart Care Clinic, we see dental hygiene as much more than just a routine medical procedure. It is an investment in health, prevention of complications, and above all, an important step towards a beautiful and confident smile. Senior dental hygienist Lenka Červinková, DiS., explains why regular dental hygiene is absolutely essential – and how it can affect the health of the whole body.
What do you actually mean by dental hygiene?
Dental hygiene is a branch of preventive dentistry that emerged in the 90s. Its goal is to keep teeth and gums healthy so that expensive dental procedures are not necessary. With regular hygiene, we can prevent cavities, gum inflammation and even tooth loss due to periodontitis . During hygiene, the patient also learns how to properly care for their teeth at home - that is, how to choose appropriate tools, how to use them and how to develop the habit of proper cleaning. This is not a high-end or cosmetic treatment, as is often mistakenly assumed, but an important medical procedure that is essential for maintaining healthy teeth in the long term.
Why is dental hygiene important?
The most common first symptom is bleeding gums and bad breath. Patients often resort to advertising products that suppress bleeding, but do not address its cause – bacterial plaque and tartar. If the problem is not addressed professionally, it can lead to the development of periodontitis and tooth loss. Interestingly, in smokers, bleeding often does not occur, even if there is severe inflammation in the mouth. The nicotine contained in cigarettes constricts blood vessels and “silences” the symptoms, which allows the inflammation to progress unnoticed for a long time. This is often one of the reasons why smokers come for treatment later and in a worse condition.
Who should undergo dental hygiene?
Simply put – everyone. From children who need to develop a positive relationship with dental care, to pregnant women for whom hygiene is especially important due to hormonal changes associated with a diagnosis of pregnancy gingivitis, to seniors or disabled patients. Everyone is treatable – you just need to know how and approach it individually.
Dental hygiene at the Smart Care clinic? How is the first visit?
Our initial dental hygiene treatment lasts two hours. During this time, we map the condition of the oral cavity using X-rays, 3D scans and photo documentation, evaluate the condition of the gums and caries, and begin with education and the cleaning itself. We work with the latest technology - the Airflow Prophylaxis Master device, which minimizes tooth sensitivity thanks to heated water and ensures a pleasant treatment.
Are other regular visits any different?
Repeated visits last an hour and we focus not only on removing tartar, biofilm and pigmentation, but above all on continuous education. Education is fundamental for us. Without it, hygiene would be meaningless. We teach the correct technique for cleaning teeth, interdental spaces, adjacent soft tissues and tongue. If necessary, we also use special dye pellets that detect where cleaning is lacking.
What mistakes do patients make most often when taking care of their teeth?
Patients often apply too much pressure on their toothbrush – both traditional and interdental. If used incorrectly, they can injure their gums and instead of motivation, they resist brushing. They also often underestimate the importance of interdental tools or use improper technique when flossing.
What role does home care, diet or smoking play?
Diet and lifestyle have a major impact on oral health. Sugary and acidic drinks, smoking, and bad habits (e.g. brushing your teeth right after eating) can lead to enamel erosion, increased sensitivity, and cavities. The right timing, technique, and choice of appliances are therefore key – and this is what we guide patients on.
Do you offer other dental hygiene services?
Yes. Our hygienists perform not only dental hygiene and periodontitis treatment, but also professional teeth whitening – both in-office, at-home and combined. We work closely with orthodontists , so patients with braces can undergo hygiene just before the braces are put on in two consecutive visits. Then, every 3 months, patients come for dental hygiene with the removal of metal ligatures, elastic bands and arches. Only the glued brackets remain on the teeth, thanks to which the most precise dental hygiene is performed. The patient then continues to the next appointment for a check-up of the braces, where colleagues from orthodontics apply new metal ligatures, elastic bands and arches as needed. This significantly reduces the risk of inflammation, enamel demineralization or cavities in hard-to-reach areas – which is not always a given for patients with braces in other facilities. Please note - patients come for a check-up of fixed braces once a month, but dental hygiene is indicated according to the patients' needs - as a standard, once every 3 months, but it can be more often.
Why Smart Care?
Unlike conventional facilities, the patient does not “slip through the system” with us. The mutual cooperation between doctors, hygienists and other specialists ensures a comprehensive approach and the best possible care. Each member of the team knows their role – but at the same time thinks of the patient as a whole.
